So, I thought I should write this post a soon as I could, while the experience is still fresh in my mind.
Might I add…that I had been in a sort of slump…a rut…whatever you like to call it. Why, you ask? I gotta be honest. Being the CEO, employee, graphic designer, business manager, AND photographer was starting to get a bit overwhelming and my heart became heavy. My creative juices were flowin’ but they just weren’t motivated enough. Skip’s Summer School in Las Vegas was just the slap in the butt I needed.
Things are currently being reorganized to make life so much easier for me…and I am EXCITED! My business is thriving, and that’s the only reason things got overwhelming… and come on, isn’t that a good thing?!
One thing I’m learning to do… OUTSOURCE. Yes. It is becoming a MUST. I know I like doing it all, but the reality is… if I want to be efficient and top quality, I’ve got to let some tasks go. I’m still insistent on designing everything myself, because I know what I want and I’m particular about my websites etc. After all, if could, I would’ve become a graphic designer in my spare time as well.
So now, back to Skip’s Summer School. What did I LOVE about it? I will tell you. First off, there were industry professionals there that have been in the business for almost 30 years. If I’m going to listen to anyone, it’s going to be people who know things from experience and have lasted the test of time. I want to last the test of time, and do it with excellence.I was really hoping to win some stuff…but oh well maybe next time. And, Shootq… you are my new bestfriend. Now that you’ve partnered up with Pictage…I am ecstatic! Photographers: if you have some time and even if you don’t (make the time!) register for Skip’s Summer School next year! If anything just to have a little getaway to focus on what you want to improve on in your business.
Some of my favorite speakers were: Kevin Kubota, Scott Bourne, Jasmine Star, Stacy Pearsall, Yervant! Yervant! Yervant!, and Cliff Mautner.
Kevin Kubota- I adore this guy. He doesn’t even know me, but yes I adore him. Why? He is the most down to earth guy. His humility and humor – Just awesome. He has a wonderful way of teaching and I respect him so much as a business man (not just one business either!) And of course, his presentations are always entertaining…especially when someone’s cell phone goes off
Yervant- I had never had a chance to hear him speak, but by far the most priceless were his words of wisdom on the industry. He knows what he’s doing, and he’s spectacular at it. He’s a veteran, and still going strong. I hung by his every word, soaking in everything like a sponge. And, he’s such a gracious man for staying much later than he had to, just to answer questions.
Cliff Mautner- He’s also one that I have never heard speak. But, I adored his presentation so very much. I mean, my logo is a direct representation of what I’m all about- Heart. And, I noticed that was a major theme with all the big shots. I loved that he had such innovative ways to share about capturing images with heart and emotion. And, even more that he wasn’t afraid to think outside the box when it came to lighting approaches. I LOVE lighting that isn’t boring and predictable. So, it was a pleasure listening to his wisdom.
All in all… I was inspired. Motivated. To dig myself out of that slump…. and I leaped out with tenacity! Thank you so much Skip!! And everyone at the whole event for contributing to my lovely experience and making me feel like I wasn’t just a face in the crowd.
Here are some band photos from my photo shoot with Gone Avery (also known as Lee, Jose, and Andrew)
I met these guys when we were just wee little kids. Um.. I think 6th grade to be exact. Andrew, I know you don’t remember me, but we had the honors classes together in 6th grade (that’s all I remember) As f0r Jose and Lee… geez. We go way back. So far back, that I won’t dare post old pictures. Really. I don’t want to re-visit my tom boy days again. But, I’d gladly post old pictures of you guys… hah! Maybe next time?
Anywhoo… here are the faves from the shoot. Check their band, Gone Avery out on myspace and facebook
Here they are! Many thanks to Sergio for his helping hands lol and to Vanessa and Hector for being so adorable!
Sergio got some amazing shots as well!
Santa Barbara is my home away from home. After living there, I fell in love and left a piece of my heart there. I’ve said it before… I vow to live there again…someday…even if for only a little while. Vanessa and Hector got engaged at the Santa Barbara Court house! If you’ve never been there, it is truly a gorgeous piece of architecture. We spent the entire day in Santa Barbara for the engagement session. So many beautiful places to fit into one day!
I have yet to develop my film rolls from the day…so I guess you can stay tuned for those as well. Should be interesting…considering the film I used said that I should have processed it by 2008. That’s okay, I’m hoping for a really awesome distorted look to the photos that I can appreciate!
I had a blast shooting Vanessa and Hector’s Santa Barbara engagement session! I mean…Santa Barbara is my city. I don’t care what anyone says…it’s mine! I adore it and miss it everyday I’m away. So, I took advantage of the time we had there and very happily tired my feet out wandering around the city.
(Vanessa, Hector, and Sergio… you were wonderful sports lol)
This is just a preview…so I hope it wets your appetite as you patiently await the rest!
If you like what you see…don’t be shy… leave a comment
I know that I have been lagging on updating the blog…so I thought that I’d liven it up a bit with this post.
As usual, I open my FedEx package as fast as I could. There it was…my couture book album sample. When I designed it I was going for a very natural, organic, feminine feel. And, I couldn’t be happier. The printing job is absolutely stunning and it’s just an all around beautiful choice in terms of a wedding album (or any occasion album for that matter)
This particular book type allows me to design the entire cover just the way I want. I figured this would be a nice addition to my album options for clients. For those couples that want to get really creative with the cover and add a true personalized touch.
AND… in other news, I am happily offering Wedding Websites for my clients. I custom design the website especially for them!
Here is an example of Vanessa and Hector’s Wedding Website: http://www.hectorandvanessa.erinjsaldana.com
I’m hoping to get everything else I have in store ready…so thanks for any patient blog followers (if there are in fact any at all. I’m bound to have some interesting things to share soon
Wow, those look amazing! You even got ME to look good, haha. You’re my hero, Erin!
